This horse stands alone from all the other horses that ever ran on a track. We all were denied to see his true greatness when they retired him at 3 years of age. Most all world records were done by horses 4 or more years of age on the west coast world fastest tracks. One example was 4 year old Spectacular Bid running at Santa Anita track carring 126 lbs in a time of 157:4/5 compared to Big Red, same weight, clocked unoffical in the same time at Belmont in the Marlboro Cup as a 3 year old.

Eddy Arcaro the rider of two Triple Crown champions. One with Whirlaway, one with Citation said Secretariat was the best he ever seen, fastest he ever seen & one of the prettiest he ever saw. Them statements packs a lot of dynamite for me in debating jaw breaking disbelievers. Just adding a little more tabacco in the smoking pipe for further discussions.(smile)

This horse had so much heart and so much talent that I believe it could beat any of the great horses of the past. Everyone loved Secretariat in the spring of 1973 when it utterly destroyed all it's competition to win the first Triple Crown since 1948. This horse simply refused to be beaten. RIP Big Red.

His time was listed as 1:59 4/5! I do not believe they timed it in 100th's of a second as they do now days. But I believe Monarcho's time was 1:59.97. In any event Sham ran a tremendous race that day!

Sham lost by 2 lengths so said Chic Anderson the race caller. If thats accurate Sham time should be 1:59 4/5 which might be a tab better than Monarchos time of 1:59.97. Just barely under 2 minutes but still would be called as a 1:59 4/5 time. That would put Hill Rise the 5th fastest time not 4th.Nothern Dancer was not a good horse but have to be said as a "Great Horse" on & off the field. Bold Ruler was also a great sire. Whether he was better than Nothern Dancer may be debatable.
