@skian1979: Vilnius is not a polish city. Polish think it's theirs because of three if I'm right polish 'occupations' of Vilnius. You're either not educated enough or a nationalist. I see polish tourists with flags from time to time here... Wilno nasze... that's sad. Thank god not all polish are like that, I have a such friend and she thinks that the idea of polish Vilnius is stupid. PS: if you want territorialism, Lithuanian Dukedom once reached to the Black sea - we're not shouting 'bout that.

Vilnius will always be a Polish city, although the Lithuanian nationalists say otherwise: the Polish air force weapons territory: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia!

The city was first mentioned in written sources in 1323, when the Letters of Grand Duke Gediminas were sent to German cities inviting Germans and members of the Jewish community to settle in the capital city, as well as to Pope John XXII. These letters contain the first unambiguous reference to Vilnius as the capital; Old Trakai Castle had been the earlier base for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
