It's a fair point to make that while in Harry Potter it's true that their cries kill (they'll only knock you out if they're exceptionally young), that isn't true in all mythology. It's commonly accepted in other folklore that mandrakes do not cry at all.

I could not agree more. This music is so beautiful and reminiscent, im tearing up at my desk right now. Funny and ironic too, as im one of those heavy metal macho guys, but upon seeing this film, it broke me down like no other film has done before. Beautiful surrealism & Del Toro shows us that even in the cruelest of realities (war), we continue on with whatever meaning, faith, purpose, and character we have, regardless of where the chips fall at the end. This was a classic tragedy.
