The Greek used to say similar things about the Romans when their empire disappeared and was replaced.I like France, and the French, but they do rather bear the hallmarks of bitterness that result from lost dreams.One of the things that most distinguishes the French from the Germans is that the latter are pure pragmatists, embracing English as the international language. It just makes rational sense for them. The French cling to a romantic notion of French once again being important.
